KUCHING: Two Sukma players suffered shock exits from the U-18 boys’ singles in the State Junior Tournament at the Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) Hall here yesterday.Top seed from team SBA-MR, Ting Sing Kiat, who played in the 2008 Terengganu Sukma, beat Jeffrey Yap 21-10, 21-12 in the second round after receiving a bye in the first but was bounced out of the quarter-finals 8-21, 10-21 by fourth seed Huong Yeu Shyang of Sibu Division BA.

However, Huong’s bid to go all the way was thwarted by seventh seed Andy Ng of Pacific Badminton Management who won their semi-final encounter 21-16, 21-17.

Sukma XIII shadow team player Kong Chee Kiet, seeded second, failed to get past the last four when he lost to Pacific Badminton Management’s Lai Zing Neng after a three-set  tussle.

Kong, representing SBA-USPTN, lost the first set 21-17 but levelled the score by taking the second 23-21. In the decider, some uncharacteristic mistakes in the closing stages dashed his chance of a final appearance as he bowed out 21-17 to the steadier Lai.

Ng will meet Lai in the final today.

In the U-15 boys’ doubles, second seeds David Ngiam and Lau Yi Ping of SBA-MR will face Miri Division BA’s Eric Jong and James Liaw in the final.

Ngiam and Lau beat Jeremy Toh-Ooi Jian Xiang from SBA-USPTN 11-21, 21-18 and 21-14 in one semi-final while Jong and Liaw overcame Kuching Division BA’s Chong Jia Ming and Jared Chung 21-12, 21-9 in the other semi-final.

The U-18 boys doubles will be between top seeds Kong Chee Kiet (SBA-UPSTN) and Ting Sing Kiat (SBA-MR) and Pacific Badminton Management’s Andy Ng and Lai Zing Neng.

In the semi-finals, Kong and Ting defeated Sibu Division BA’s Danny Lim and Tiong Chee Seng 21-16, 21-13 while Ng and Lai defeated KSKS’ Gabriel Wong and Victor Yuan 21-13, 22-20.

The other finals today are Pacific Badminton Management’s Chai Hui Ching vs SBA-MR’s    Grace Ngiam in the U-12 girls’ singles; Michelle Kong (Pacific Badminton Management) vs Vinnie Liong from Miri Division BA in the U-15 girls singles; Pacific Badminton Management’s Tan Ann Ching vs Miri Division BA’s Kam Ka Li in the U-18 girls singles and Miri Division BA’s Kam Sing Siong vs teammate Wilson Lau in the U-12 boys’ singles.

Matches will start at 8.30am.
