Meeting Chong Wei!

A dream meeting with Chong Wei
By Nigel Edgar

KUCHING: About 30 youngsters from Pacific Badminton Management (PBM) Academy had a very special treat yesterday — meeting their hero and world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei at Sentosa Sports Centre near here.

Chong Wei was accompanied by national coach Datuk Misbun Sidek, who was at the centre to conduct a short clinic, organised by Sarawak Badminton Association (BA) and PBM, as part of the mental toughness camp here for 19 players of the national squad from January 30 to February 2.

Chong Wei told reporters that he was now focusing on the All-England Championship in May.

“I have not won the All-England even after three tries.

“This year, I hope I can at least reach the final,” he said.

Apart from that, Chong Wei is also eyeing the 2012 Olympics after winning the silver medal in Beijing.

Meanwhile, Misbun said it was a great opportunity for the youngsters to be training at a facility as well equipped as PBM Academy.

“They have potential … they are still under 16 and have more room to improve,” he added.

However, he pointed out that to get good results, the coach, the parents and the players themselves must have a strong interest in the sport.

“It’s important, especially for parents to give their full support if they want their children to realise their full potential.

“But then again, it’s also up to the children to show they are really interested in becoming world-class players,” Misbun added.
